An Indian Captain's Courage: Modi's 9/11 Comparison

Captain Smit Machchhar gave India a reason to stand proud. After being seriously injured inside the cockpit of Flydubai flight FZ1073, the Indian captain managed to open the cockpit door and give others a chance to intervene.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described his actions as preventing another 9/11-like attack. That is the Prime Minister's comparison, and it conveys the gravity of the danger. It does not establish a specific intended ground target.
The UAE Attorney-General subsequently said the co-pilot had attempted a terrorist act. The investigation into motives and possible links continues.
The action that made intervention possible
Opening that door mattered. Passengers and crew could enter and overpower the attacker; reserve pilots aboard then brought the aircraft safely to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Their contribution belongs in every account of the rescue.
Smit's courage deserves recognition in its own right. He faced an immediate threat to his life and still acted for the people entrusted to him. India can celebrate him openly and wish him a full recovery.
Responsibility for the people entrusted to us
For us, his story gives a human face to responsibility. When someone depends on your judgment, your actions matter beyond your own safety and comfort. Captain Smit carried that responsibility through an extraordinary ordeal. We are proud that he is Indian.
