
An Indoor Digital Twin Is Useful Only If the Building Keeps Telling the Truth

An indoor digital twin can help an emergency-response team locate a room, access point, camera or automated external defibrillator before arriving at a facility. In that situation, current building information is not simply convenient. It can affect a life-and-death response.
The City of Frisco, Texas, has been expanding indoor mapping across schools, municipal buildings and other facilities. Esri reports that the program covers more than 200 facilities and connects information from more than 30 systems. The city uses the indoor information for public safety, facility operations and access to building assets.
This is a strong example of what a digital building record can become after construction. It also highlights two responsibilities that cannot be separated: maintaining accuracy and protecting access.
The as-built model should be built during construction
Before a completed building is handed over, the general contractor and relevant trade contractors should update the project model so that it reflects the correct as-built condition.
Those updates should not be held until the end. Changes occur throughout construction: equipment selections are revised, routing shifts around field conditions, access requirements change, and installations differ from early coordination assumptions. If teams wait until closeout, they may have to reconstruct months of decisions from RFIs, marked-up drawings, photographs and memory.
A better workflow is to capture changes at regular intervals throughout construction. The project can establish model-update milestones around major coordination releases, approved field changes, above-ceiling close-in, equipment installation, testing and final turnover.
By the time the operations and maintenance team receives the model, it should be the result of an ongoing record process, not a last-minute closeout exercise.
Accuracy has to continue after handover
Even a carefully prepared as-built record begins to age once the building is occupied.
Rooms change use. Equipment is replaced. Access-control devices move. Renovations alter walls and pathways. If the physical building changes but the digital record does not, confidence in the twin declines.
Ongoing ownership therefore needs to be clear. The owner should define:
who can authorize a change to the building record;
which renovations or maintenance events require an update;
what source documentation supports the change;
how field conditions are verified;
when the information is reviewed for completeness;
which systems receive the updated data.
The workflow does not have to capture every minor maintenance action in a complex model. It does need to preserve the information that emergency teams, facility staff and future design teams depend upon.
The right information at the right time can be a boon
When maintained properly, an indoor digital twin can support much more than emergency response.
Facility staff can locate assets and retrieve maintenance records. Renovation teams can begin with better existing-condition information. Owners can connect rooms and equipment with inspection, warranty and replacement data. Emergency personnel can receive the most current information available instead of relying only on an old plan set.
Putting the right information in the right hands at the right time can be a boon. But “the right hands” is an important part of that statement.
Detailed building information also creates security responsibility
Indoor maps can contain sensitive information about access points, security devices, equipment and internal circulation. If that information is shared with people who should not see it, it could be misused for theft or other harmful activity. The consequences can be even higher for confidential facilities or projects of national importance.
Access should therefore follow role and purpose. An emergency responder may need a different view from a maintenance technician, outside consultant or member of the public. Owners should consider identity controls, role-based permissions, audit history, secure mobile access, data classification and procedures for emergency access.
Security should not make the information unusable. It should make appropriate access dependable and inappropriate access difficult.
A digital twin is an operational commitment
The Frisco program demonstrates the practical value of indoor building information. The technology can support public safety, maintenance, asset records and future renovation.
However, a digital twin is not a one-time model delivery. It is an operational commitment. Contractors must establish a dependable as-built record during construction, owners must maintain it after turnover, and everyone involved must protect information according to its sensitivity.
When those responsibilities are clear, the twin can remain useful long after the project team leaves the site.
